Our Story

Over the Years

Mullen Group has a rich history that spans over 70 years, beginning with the establishment of a small trucking company in 1949. Over the years, the company has grown and evolved to become one of the largest and most respected transportation and logistics providers in Western Canada. From humble beginnings to a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, Mullen Group has stayed true to its core values of integrity, innovation, and excellence. This page provides a detailed timeline of the company’s history, highlighting key milestones and significant events that have shaped Mullen Group into the industry leader it is today.

1949

Founded

  • Roland Mullen Bought his first truck, a ’49 Chev Maple Leaf, he persevered through two decades of economic growth and contraction. He hauled gravel for $3.50 per hour in 1950 and by the mid-50s was operating three trucks.

1964

  • Established as Mullen Trucking Ltd.

1965

  • In the early 1960s, amid an economic downturn, Roland drove for Nodwell Bros. in Alaska. When the economy improved, he again went independent, buying his first Kenworth for $26,000 and a second Kenworth three years later.

1979

  • The fleet continued to expand throughout the 1970s. Mullen had authority to transport across the Canada-U.S. border and the fleet size increased to 40 trucks.

1980

  • Mullen relocated from Calgary to Aldersyde, located south of the city, where it operated from a modified mobile home.

1983

  • Incorporated under the Alberta Companies Act. The Company began to computerize its operations and established its Oilfield Division. Business in the United States increased and by 1984 the Company had 110 owner operators.

1989

  • The Company purchased FSJ L.A.N.D. Transport Ltd. and moved the Oilfield Division to Leduc.

1990

  • Mullen moved to new, expanded facilities in Aldersyde and implemented its Quality Program.

1991

  • Murray Mullen was appointed President & CEO
^
1993

Mullen Went Public

  • Raising $9.3 million, Murray Mullen was appointed to the Board of Directors. Listed on the TSX under the ticker MTL, Mullen first traded at $4.50 per share ($1.50 after a 3:1 split).

1994

  • Mullen’s Truckload Division had a customer base of over 2,000. The company acquired the Premay Group of companies and installed satellite communications in Oilfield Division trucks.

1997

  • Name changed to Mullen Transportation Inc.

2000

  • Mullen issued its first semi-annual dividend payment to shareholders. In a series of initiatives between 2000 and 2002 Mullen moved to the forefront of logistics-driven transportation services across Canada and into the Far North. In combination with Inuvialuit Development Corporation and Northern Transportation Company, Mullen began providing a total transportation solution to the natural resources industry in the far north.

2001

  • Murray was appointed Chairman of the Board, a position he continues to hold.

2002

  • Record revenues and strong profits in 2001 positioned the company to acquire seven additional companies.

2005

  • In July 2005, Mullen completed its conversion into an income trust. Name changed to Mullen Group Income Fund. Mullen Group accelerated its growth strategy through a series of acquisitions primarily focused in its Oilfield Services segment.

2006

  • Mullen Group completed the plan of arrangement with Producers Oilfield Services Inc. and a Private Placement (C$400M).

2009

  • On May 1, 2009, Mullen Group Income Fund was reorganized from an income trust into a traditional corporation. The corporate name was changed to Mullen Group Ltd. trading under the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol “MTL”.

2011

  • Mullen Group acquired all the issued and outstanding common shares of Hi-Way 9 Express Ltd., Load-Way Ltd., Streamline Logistics Inc. and 1006213 Alberta Ltd. (collectively, “Hi-Way 9”).

2012

  • In Murray Mullen’s Chairman’s Message – “We just need pipelines!”

2013

  • Mullen Group celebrates 20 years as a public company.

2014

  • Refinanced private placement (C$400M); pivot to less-than-truckload with less focus on oilfield service.

2015

  • Mullen Group acquired, along with a few additional acquisitions in the year, Manitoba-based Gardewine Group Limited Partnership, one of the largest privately owned transportation carriers in Canada.

  • Equity Transaction (C$160 million)

  • Debentures (C$125 million).

2020

  • Created three operating segments.

  • Mullen Group secured 21 acquisitions/tuck-ins

2021

  • completed six acquisitions adding approximately C$400 million in annual revenue and added a fourth operating segment.

  • Mullen Group celebrates 30 years as a public company; acquisitions directed into Specialized & Industrial Services segment.
